Reclaiming Power: Yairy Vega Muenala’s Fight for Indigenous Women’s Leadership and Rights
My name is Yairy Vega Muenala, and I am a 24-year-old Indigenous woman dedicated to advocating for the rights of Indigenous Peoples, especially women. My journey has been shaped by my passion for creating spaces where Indigenous women can thrive, lead, and actively participate in decisions that impact their lives and communities. This commitment has inspired me to initiate and support several projects aimed at empowering Indigenous women in Ecuador and beyond.
One of my proudest achievements has been co-organizing a Women’s Leadership Camp specifically designed for rural Indigenous women. This initiative aimed to provide participants with the tools to strengthen their leadership skills, enabling them to overcome barriers like entrenched gender roles and limited political awareness. The camp created a supportive environment where women could learn, grow, and discover their potential to lead change in their communities. Witnessing participants leave the camp with renewed confidence and a vision for their roles as leaders was both humbling and motivating.
Currently, I am spearheading a series of workshops called “Footprints of Power” for young Indigenous women, focusing on political participation and activism. I firmly believe that having Indigenous voices—especially those of young women—in decision-making spaces like parliaments is essential for achieving equitable and inclusive governance. Through these workshops, I hope to inspire a new generation of leaders who can advocate for policies that reflect the unique needs and priorities of Indigenous communities.
My advocacy extends beyond local projects. As a youth advisor to the European Union in Ecuador, I have had the privilege of contributing to initiatives that prioritize youth and peacebuilding. This role has allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals and organizations, enriching my understanding of the challenges and opportunities in promoting Indigenous rights on a larger scale.
Additionally, I have participated in international forums to shed light on the realities faced by Indigenous Peoples. These experiences have been transformative—not only in amplifying our voices on global platforms but also in building networks with advocates worldwide. Each event has reinforced my belief in the power of collective action and solidarity in driving meaningful change.
What drives me is the resilience and strength of Indigenous women. Despite systemic challenges and societal biases, these women are the backbone of our communities, carrying traditions, wisdom, and a profound connection to our lands. My work is fueled by a vision of a world where Indigenous women are no longer marginalized but celebrated for their contributions and leadership.
While the road ahead is long, I remain committed to creating opportunities and dismantling barriers for Indigenous women. Every workshop, every speech, and every initiative brings us closer to a future where Indigenous voices shape the policies that affect us. Together, we can redefine leadership and ensure that no voice is left unheard.
Thank you for reading my story. I hope it inspires you to join me in advocating for a more inclusive and equitable world.
