Rooted in Care, Driven by Impact: Dorcas’s Journey
I am Dorcas Fanijo, and my heart has always been drawn to children. I remember early on noticing how many children in my community were living in fear – unsure who to trust, unsure how to say “no,” and often unaware of their rights. Seeing this, I felt a deep calling: I could not stand by while children’s innocence and confidence were threatened by silence and fear. I knew I had to take action.
That calling led me to start Safe Child Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on child protection, advocacy, and empowerment. Our mission is simple but powerful: to teach children body safety, help them recognize unsafe situations, and empower them to speak up. But our work doesn’t stop there. We also provide learning materials and school support for vulnerable children, because safety and education go hand in hand in shaping confident, capable young people.
Over the years, I have had the joy of reaching hundreds of children across schools in Osun State, Nigeria.
One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is seeing children gain confidence and awareness through our programs. Watching them realize that their voice matters, that they have the right to feel safe, and that they can speak up when something is wrong is a constant reminder of why this work is so important.
But the impact isn’t just on the children – it extends to families and communities. By involving parents, teachers, and community members, we create environments where children are truly supported and protected. I’ve seen parents take steps to be more present, teachers encourage safe communication, and young people inspired to become advocates themselves. These ripple effects are proof that one person’s passion, combined with collective effort, can spark real change.
What drives me is simple: every child deserves a happy childhood and a safe space to grow, learn, and thrive. That belief pushes me to wake up every day, plan new outreaches, connect with organizations for support, and find creative ways to expand our reach. I am motivated not by recognition or titles, but by the confidence, safety, and hope we bring into children’s lives.
I have learned through this journey that impact is not measured by numbers alone – it’s measured by the smiles, the courage, and the empowerment we instill in the children we serve. Even small actions, like a conversation with a child or a donated book, can ripple into lifelong change.
My story is one of passion, purpose, and unwavering commitment. I believe that empowering a child today creates a safer, brighter tomorrow for all of us. And I am determined to continue this journey, reaching more children, building stronger communities, and partnering with others who share this vision. Because when children are safe, confident, and heard, the possibilities are endless.
