From Afghanistan: A Journey of Empowerment through Education
On August 1, 2021, I stepped into the vibrant halls of the University of Kabul, my heart racing with excitement. This was more than just an institution; it embodied my dreams and aspirations. After a year of relentless hard work, I had finally earned my place at the largest university in Afghanistan, ready to delve into the world of economics and forge a brighter future. Amidst the cacophony of students bustling between classes, I felt a sense of belonging. My friends and I often gathered to discuss our ambitions and celebrate our small victories. My part-time job as a visa consultant allowed me to contribute to my family while pursuing my studies, and life felt full of promise.
But that sense of hope was shattered on August 15, 2021. As the Taliban seized control of Kabul, the air thickened with fear and uncertainty. The freedom I had fought so hard to attain evaporated before my eyes. I watched as the university, once a sanctuary of knowledge and opportunity, transformed into a haunting reminder of what we were losing. Confined to my home, I felt paralyzed by despair. The world outside was no longer familiar; it had become a landscape marked by oppression. My heart ached for countless Afghan girls who, like me, faced a future devoid of hope. Each news report of young girls denied education cut deep, fueling my resolve to take action.

Determined to fight back against the encroaching darkness, I joined local protests, standing alongside brave men and women committed to advocating for our rights. We raised our voices in a chorus of defiance, demanding recognition and restoration of our rights. During one powerful demonstration, I had the opportunity to speak with a French journalist. I shared my story, highlighting the urgent need for international support for Afghan girls facing oppression. When the interview aired on French television and went viral, I felt a rush of hope; my voice had reached people worldwide. Yet, with this newfound visibility came peril. Shortly after the broadcast, I began receiving threats from the Taliban, furious at my activism. In the midst of these challenges, I realized the importance of creating a platform for Afghan women to unite and advocate for their rights. This realization led me to establish the Women Empowerment Association (WEA), an initiative dedicated to empowering Afghan girls through education and community support.
WEA aims to provide online classes, mentorship, and resources to help young women overcome the barriers they face in accessing education. Our online classes connect Afghan girls with experienced teachers and volunteers, allowing them to continue their education despite the oppressive environment. Through WEA, we have fostered a supportive community that transcends borders, enabling girls to share their experiences, aspirations, and knowledge. It is a beautiful reminder that, even in the darkest times, education can illuminate the path to a better future. I am proud to say that WEA has made a tangible impact. We have provided essential study materials and organized workshops on various subjects, equipping girls with the skills they need to pursue their dreams. The resilience and determination of these young women inspire me every day. They are not only fighting for their education but also for the rights of future generations.

As I continue my journey as an activist, I remain committed to advocating for girls’ education and empowerment. My experiences have shown me that the strength of the human spirit knows no bounds. Together, we can create a future where every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive, lighting the way for generations to come. Through WEA and our collective efforts, we will continue to challenge the status quo and ensure that Afghan girls receive the education they deserve.
