From Underdog to Advocate: Embracing Resilience and Empowering Communities
By Clementina Jose, Licensed Master of Social Work
Growing up in Queens, NY, within a Nigerian family, I was immersed in a culture that deeply valued education. My parents instilled in me the importance of knowledge and learning from a very young age. However, outside of my family, I was often viewed as an underdog. My outspoken nature and bluntness were frequently misinterpreted, leading others to underestimate my potential. This dichotomy between my family’s support and the outside world’s skepticism fueled my determination to prove myself. I vividly remember an incident in the 11th grade that solidified my resolve. After sharing my dreams for the future with my class, my teacher laughed in my face, dismissing my aspirations. She couldn’t see past my fairly average SAT score and the struggles I faced with emotional regulation in high school. I was seen as a “hothead” and was written off by many. Yet, as I witnessed my peers being encouraged and supported in their dreams, I felt a burning desire to show that I too had potential and could achieve greatness.
Fast forward to today, at 22 years old, I stand as a testament to resilience and determination. I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in social work. I am also licensed to practice in my state and as a licensed professional life coach. I am dedicated to helping others navigate their challenges and achieve their goals. My journey has not been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Every step I have taken has been driven by my passion for making a positive impact and my commitment to giving back to my community.
In my current role as a social work supervisor within a nonprofit organization in Brooklyn, NY, I oversee counseling services and operations across multiple sites. This position allows me to nurture students and support communities like the one I grew up in. I provide professional development and coaching to teachers, equipping them with the tools they need to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment. My work is driven by the belief that every student, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to succeed. Outside of my day-to-day work, I am a passionate advocate and activist for mental health. I write articles for administrators and professionals, focusing on making social-emotional learning accessible and equitable for communities of color. My articles aim to shed light on the unique challenges these communities face and offer practical solutions to address them. I believe that by raising awareness and promoting understanding, we can create a more inclusive and supportive society.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey has been my role as a speaker. I have had the privilege of speaking at several NYC Department of Education schools (including the school where I was laughed at by my teacher), sharing my story and inspiring students to pursue their dreams despite the obstacles they may face. These speaking engagements allow me to connect with young people on a personal level, offering them hope and encouragement. I want them to see that their circumstances do not define their future and that they have the power to shape their own destinies.
A pinnacle moment in my advocacy work was speaking at the White House during the Cultivating Possibilities White House Youth Policy Summit in 2024. This opportunity allowed me to bring my message of resilience and empowerment to a national stage. It was a humbling experience to share my journey and advocate for policies that support mental health. Standing in the White House, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment and responsibility to continue my work on a broader scale. What motivates me every day is the knowledge that I am making a difference in the lives of others. Seeing the impact of my work, whether it’s through the success of the students I mentor or the positive changes in the communities I serve, fuels my passion and commitment. I am driven by the desire to create a world where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive.
Reflecting on my journey, I am proud of how far I have come. From being an underdog to becoming a social work supervisor, licensed counselor, life coach, writer, and speaker, I have defied the expectations placed upon me. I am living proof that with determination, resilience, and support, anything is possible. My story is not just about overcoming obstacles but about using those experiences to uplift others and create lasting change. Looking ahead, I am excited to continue my work and expand my impact. I want to reach more students, advocate for more inclusive policies, and write more articles that inspire and educate. My goal is to empower as many people as possible to believe in their potential and pursue their dreams. Every person has a unique story, and I am committed to helping them write theirs.
