|Who We Serve|
Peace First’s program serves students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade in our partner schools in Boston, Los Angeles and New York. Our school sites engage Peace First as a partner to teach and model for children ways to resolve conflicts peacefully and to instill lifelong communication and leadership skills.
Each week, from the first day of school to the last, students receive one Peace First lesson per week during regular classroom hours, alongside academic subjects such as reading and math. Our developmentally-appropriate curriculum relies on experiential learning principles and cooperative games to teach children the fundamental skills of peacemaking: conflict resolution, civic engagement, empathy, cooperation and communication. As a result of our work, students learn how to be creative problem solvers, how to demonstrate courage and compassion, how to take a stand, and how to engage others in creating lasting change in their schools and communities. In these ways, students learn how they can make the world a better place.
Not only do we teach peacemaking alongside core academic subjects, we work with the adults in a school to build a school’s capacity to create a safer learning environment: a place where students learn to address the root causes of bullying, are empowered to stand up for themselves and others, and gain an appreciation for relationships and community. We engage school leaders in developing initiatives that integrate peacemaking into the school’s culture through rituals and positive behavior and discipline plans. We also provide teachers with techniques to incorporate peacemaking skills into their daily practice. In this way, Peace First schools are transformed into places where peacemaking is recognized and celebrated.
Beyond our partner schools, we are now providing Peace First’s signature curriculum and tools free of charge to educators nationwide. The Peace First Digital Activity Center offers our full set of peacemaking lessons and community service learning projects in a searchable database. This interactive platform offers us an unprecedented opportunity to engage new partners and to train educators and youth leaders in integrating Peace First into their core program offerings. Through the Digital Activity Center, Peace First can now be integrated into afterschool programs and non-traditional educational and recreational settings.
